John Cutruzzola was born in the small village of Gagliato, in the southern Italian region of Calabria. From an early age John displayed a
propensity for the arts and education, pursuing his passions through sketching,
composing poetry, music lessons and correspondence. By the age of thirteen, necessity required
John to focus on providing for himself and his family. At the age of 16, John
had acquired his Master Builder status and secured his first construction contract.
John continued to foster a strong sense of self-improvement and the priority of
giving back to the community.
Barely 22 years of age, John left for
Canada to start a new life. John knew his life’s work lay in the foundation and
development of the artist, citizen and entrepreneur.
From the early days in Canada, John
established a network of friends and contemporaries within the local Toronto
art scene. Inspired by his new
community, John applied himself to mastering his English and technical skills,
while continuing with his art studies. In the late 1960’s and 70’s, as a
general contractor and a passionate advocate for the development of local
culture, John was instrumental in developing Toronto’s now prestigious
Yorkville district.
In the 1980’s John, relocated his home
and focus to the town of Brampton. As a prominent developer, conscientious
citizen, and keen visual artist John has been influential in directing the
architectural, cultural and artistic landscapes of his community.
In recognition of his dedication to
his community and his pursuit of artistic and cultural progress, John has been
recognized with multiple awards. Among them, Les Carbot Award from the Canadian
Art Council, the 2004 Art Person of the Year, the 1993 Business Person of the
Year and the 2007 Citizen of the Year.
John’s sense of principles, community
and creativity has been the driving force that motivates and inspires him. John
holds firm to the belief that art, culture and philanthropy are at the
foundation of a healthy and flourishing community. As such, John continues to
work and support various cultural interests. To advance these objectives, each
year John holds an operatic Gala and a pancake breakfasts in support of the
Rose Theatre and the Arts community and John continues to work along side the
Salvation Army and Sheridan College on their different initiatives.
